Yo dawg, I heard you like central driving positions so we gave your truck a central driving position so you can carry your car with a central driving position in a truck with a central driving position.
Hmm, doesn't work quite as well, does it?

As an engineer in the body group for International, I will find out who did this and make fun of them.

I mean, the design makes sense (you can carry longer pipe across the sides) but its soooooo ugly. But yes, you should make fun of them.

Looks like they did it to nearly emulate a cab over engine truck because it needs to be maneuverable in the city. Dura star grill with a very much raised up cab.

I was just going by what Wikipedia said .
International Transtar 8600 (could be an 8500 I suppose) 6x4 with a special single-seat narrow cabin. This is needed to provide room for longer pipes than would otherwise have been possible for a truck of this length. I don't know if NYC regulations on overall length make this design particularly useful in the city. The doors are cut off at the bottom, but should the load block them there is also usually a rooftop hatch to allow entry and egress.
